There has been a lot of talk in the media about the E Cig recently. Much of it has been about how this nicotine replacement product has helped people cut down on tobacco products, save money and beat the indoor smoking ban. There has however been a number of columnists talking about potential health risks involved in using an E cigarette because of the lack of research done on their long-term use. For some reason many people seem to equate the fact that there is no research points to the fact that the product therefore must be dangerous.
It is true that no long-term studies which have been carried out on the safety of E Cigs but that is mainly due to the fact that they just haven’t been around long enough for it to be carried out and the fact that doing the necessary tests would be prohibitively expensive for any Electronic Cigarette manufacturer or retailer.
Health campaigners last year called for detailed research to be carried out into the health implications of electronic cigarettes but I think their efforts would have done more for the health of the nation if they had spent their time trying to convince smokers to switch to the electronic cigarette from tobacco. I honestly can’t understand the point of trying to turn people away from the e cigarette when we already know the horrendous consequences of smoking cigarettes.
The Anti-Electronic Cigarette circus is even worse in the US where the FDA has recently moved to suppress distribution of the products after it stated that testing had shown that half the samples under scrutiny contained a know carcinogen called nitrosamine. I think this highlights the need to source your nicotine cartridges or E-Liquid from a supplier you trust who can provide evidence of the ingredients used in production. At the same time, I don’t feel that this is something that users should be particularly worried about if we are only using the Electronic Cigarette as a replacement for tobacco which contains these compounds in much higher numbers.
My feeling is that even long-term use of the E Cigarette is not going to lead to significant health challenges amongst the vast majority of people, certainly not on the scale that we see with tobacco. If you are looking for a change you might want to think about switching from tobacco to vaporized nicotine to see if you like it. It will save you some cash, and you won’t have to walk around smelling like a dirty ashtray.
At the end of the day you have to make up your own mind about whether you are willing to take the small risk that using an Electronic Cigarette might cause some negative effects on your health. If you are like the vast majority of smokers you will be extremely happy with the outcome of your experiment.
